Rocket Lab to Acquire Motiv Space Systems to Expand Space Robotics, Satellite Component Capabilities

Rocket Lab has signed a definitive agreement to acquire California-based Motiv Space Systems, adding space robotics and precision spacecraft mechanism technologies to its space systems portfolio.

The company said Thursday the acquisition supports its vertical integration strategy and expands its capabilities for planetary exploration, national security and satellite constellation programs.

What Capabilities Does Motiv Bring?

Motiv develops robotic arms, actuators, motion control systems and precision spacecraft mechanisms used in missions such as NASA’s Mars Perseverance rover and the CADRE lunar rover program.

The acquisition will also bring production of critical satellite components in-house, including solar array drive assemblies, antenna and propulsion gimbals, filter wheels, and precision drive electronics.

Rocket Lab said the move is intended to reduce supply chain constraints and manufacturing bottlenecks tied to constellation-scale satellite production.

“Motiv has built a stellar reputation for delivering reliable, high-performance robotics and mechanisms that thrive in the harshest space environments,” said Peter Beck, founder and CEO of Rocket Lab.

How Does the Deal Expand Rocket Lab’s Space Strategy?

Motiv’s technologies are expected to position Rocket Lab to support future lunar and planetary missions, including potential Mars sample return efforts and national security space programs. Motiv previously partnered with Blue Origin on the Defense Innovation Unit’s Modularity for Space Systems program, which focused on robotic servicing technologies for on-orbit satellite repair, refueling and assembly.

The acquisition adds approximately 50 engineers and technicians and a California manufacturing facility to Rocket Lab’s operations.

How Does Motiv Fit Into Rocket Lab’s Acquisition Strategy?

The transaction continues Rocket Lab’s efforts to expand vertically integrated space systems capabilities through acquisitions.

In March, Rocket Lab completed its acquisition of Optical Support Inc. to strengthen optical payload and missile tracking technologies supporting Space Development Agency programs and national security missions.

The company also acquired laser communications provider Mynaric in April to expand production of optical inter-satellite communication terminals used in SDA’s Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture.

“Our acquisition strategy is simple but proven and effective: we identify the best space technologies that have struggled to scale, and we bring them into the Rocket Lab ecosystem,” Beck said.

The Motiv acquisition is expected to close during the second quarter of 2026, subject to customary closing conditions.
