The U.S. Navy is set to award a $1.2B contract for the contruction of its next-generation small multimission frigate in an initiative to accelerate a shipbuilding program that was supposed to commence later this year, Breaking Defense reported Tuesday.
The service plans to initially procure 10 FFG(X) vessels before it releases another solicitation to seek 10 additional frigates that can accommodate the Aegis combat system and SPY-6 radar technology, the report noted.
A team comprised of General Dynamics’ (NYSE: GD) Bath Iron Works subsidiary and Navantia intends to offer an F100 frigate design, while Austal plans to submit its littoral combat ship version with an aluminum trimaran hull.
