Potential $3.7B Sale of Abrams Tanks to Poland Gets State Department Clearance

The State Department has approved Poland’s request to buy from the U.S. government M1A1 Abrams main battle tanks, other vehicles and related equipment through a potential $3.75 billion foreign military sales agreement.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency said Tuesday there will be 12 prime contractors on the proposed FMS transaction, which includes M88A2 Hercules combat recovery vehicles, M1110 joint assault bridges, M577A3 command vehicles, M1152A1 high mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicles, M1279A1 joint light tactical vehicles, AGT1500 gas turbine engines and machine guns.

Poland will use the tanks, military vehicles and related equipment to deter potential adversaries and take part in NATO operations.

The transaction also covers communications equipment, GPS receivers, spare and repair parts, technical manuals and publications, technical engineering, logistics, personnel services and program support and will require the deployment of up to five U.S. government and contractor representatives to Poland for up to five years to support equipment training and fielding efforts.

DSCA said it notified Congress of the potential transaction Tuesday.
