Matt Needy
Matt Needy, vice president of operations at Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (NYSE: HII) Newport News Shipbuilding division, will assume the role of VP of Navy programs at the division on March 1.
He will succeed Ken Mahler, who is set to retire in April after more than three decades with the company, and report directly to Jennifer Boykin, president of Newport News Shipbuilding, HII said Tuesday.
Needy will oversee aircraft carrier construction, overhaul, refueling and inactivation programs as well as fleet support operations and submarine construction efforts in his new role.
“The year ahead promises to be filled with steady and challenging work as we execute on our programs to build and maintain our nation’s aircraft carriers and submarines and to deliver them into the Navy’s fleet,” Boykin said. “Matt’s leadership will be critical in ensuring a rigorous operational focus and strong performance on our historic backlog.”
He brings to the role nearly three decades of experience in shipbuilding across the areas of systems engineering, manufacturing, design engineering, strategy and process improvement. He led the Virginia-class submarine construction project and maintenance work on the submarine fleet.
