The Space Development Agency has awarded Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) and York Space Systems contracts worth $281.5M combined to provide space vehicles that will comprise the initial layer of a proposed military satellite network.
Lockheed secured a $187.5M contract to supply spacecraft and develop paths for optical intersatellite links that will serve as part of the Transport Layer Tranche 0, the Department of Defense said Monday.
In the same notice, the DoD said that York received a $94M contract to also provide space vehicles and OISL paths for the transport layer.
SDA will obligate fiscal 2020 defense-wide research, development, test and evaluation funds for the two firm-fixed-price awards.
Both contractors will perform most of the work in Colorado and the rest in various locations within the continental U.S.
In May, SDA released its solicitation for the design, development, testing and deployment of the first batch of satellites for the transport layer.
The agency expects to receive the spacecraft by July 31, 2022, according to the original notice.
