Leidos (NYSE: LDOS) has won a potential $358.5 million contract from the U.S. Navy to build a medium-size unmanned undersea vehicle for surface-launched mine countermeasures and torpedo tube-launched data collection operations.
Naval Sea Systems Command received four offers for the MUUV project and obligated an initial $12 million to cover design services during the one-year base period of performance, according to a Department of Defense notice posted Thursday.
A May 2020 request for proposals indicated that the branch was seeking an open architecture-based vehicle that would have two configurations: Razorback Torpedo Tube Launch & Recovery and Maritime Expeditionary Mine Countermeasures UUV.
The first variant is envisioned to deploy from a submarine’s torpedo tube and perform autonomous oceanographic sensing task, while the second variant is intended to launch from a surface platform and help the service find naval mines.
