L3 Technologies (NYSE: LLL) has purchased Colorado Springs, Colorado-based initial flight training company Doss Aviation for an undisclosed amount in a strategy to expand presence in the military pilot training market.
New York City-based L3 said Thursday will integrate Doss Aviation into its electronic systems business segment and run the company as L3 Doss.
Christopher Kubasik, L3 president and chief operating officer and an inductee into Executive Mosaics Wash100 for 2017, said the addition of Doss Aviations military training services to L3s training platforms portfolio would help increase the New York City-based aerospace and defense contractors capability to meet the rising demand for commercial and international military pilots.
Todd Gautier, a senior vice president and president of L3s electronic systems business segment, said Doss Aviation provides IFT training support to the U.S. Air Force and its acquisition would expand L3s training portfolio and broaden its footprint in the military instruction field.
Doss Aviation offers flight training and curriculum coursework to unmanned aircraft pilots, fixed-wing aircraft aviators and weapons officers through its Pueblo, Colorado-based facility.
The company also provides aircraft repair and modification, bulk refueling services and other airfield support at U.S. government bases as well as instructor pilots for the U.S. Armys rotary-wing planes.
Doss Aviation is expected to record approximately $50 million in 2017 sales and to be accretive to L3s earnings.
The transaction came days after L3 acquired Centreville, Virginia-based systems engineering firm Adaptive Methods as part of its undersea market expansion efforts.
