John Sherman, the intelligence community’s chief information officer, has been appointed to succeed the retiring Essye Miller as principal deputy CIO of the Department of Defense.
Sherman, who leads modernization and security efforts across the IC’s information technology enterprise, will step down from his role in June, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence said Monday
FedScoop reported that both Miller and Sherman have been serving in their respective positions since 2017.
Dana Deasy, DoD CIO and 2020 Wash100 Award recipient, said that Miller has been a trusted adviser to him during her tenure at the department.
“John will bring a breadth of experience to the organization and I look forward to working with him as we continue to implement the digital modernization strategy across the DoD,” Deasy noted.
Prior to joining the IC, Sherman held deputy director and senior executive roles at the CIA and National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency.
His two-decade career in the intelligence sector includes significant experience handling highly classified government data through commercial cloud technologies.
