John Sherman, chief information officer of the Department of Defense and an inductee into Executive Mosaic’s 2023 Wash100, said he is working on a new DOD guidance on the Joint Warfighting Cloud Capability program as part of efforts to ensure “cloud rationalization” and enable the government to get the best mission outcome and value for money, Breaking Defense reported Tuesday.
“Very likely I’m going to be signing out some guidance in the next couple of months here about how I expect the enterprise to leverage JWCC in terms of what must go in there and where are some other areas that could [have] some flexibility,” Sherman told the publication in a Jan. 27 interview.
He said he wants DOD to implement JWCC “in a smart way” and expects the program to serve as the keystone of all cloud initiatives and as the “absolute foundation” for Joint All-Domain Command and Control.
“And that’s why rather than just let this kind of run on autopilot, there is going to be some guidance about how this works,” he said of JWCC.
In December, Amazon’s (Nasdaq: AMZN) cloud computing business, Google, Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) and Oracle (NYSE: ORCL) won spots on the potential $9 billion JWCC contract, which will enable DOD to directly procure enterprisewide cloud service offerings from commercial service providers across all classification levels and security domains.
