Huntington Ingalls Industries™ (NYSE:HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division has secured an $88.2 million contract from the U.S. Coast Guard to procure long-lead materials for the production of a ninth National Security Cutter.
Ingalls Shipbuilding will use the funds to purchase steel, main propulsion systems, generators, electrical switchboards and major castings for NSC 9, HII said Tuesday.
œThis long-lead material contract gives our shipbuilders the ability to immediately start work on the ship in anticipation of the construction contract, said Kari Wilkinson, Ingalls Shipbuilding’s vice president of program management.
œCoast Guard leadership has stated these ships help fill a need to bolster front-line operations in the fight against crime, especially drug interdictions, said Brian Cuccias, Ingalls Shipbuilding president.
NSC ships are designed to assist in maritime security operations and features an aft launch and recovery area for two rigid hull inflatable boats and a flight deck for manned and unmanned rotary wing aircraft.
