A business unit of General Atomics has secured a contract from the Naval Surface Warfare Center to manufacture and deliver two bearing support structures for the U.S. Navy’s Columbia-class submarine construction program.
General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems will produce large BSS platforms at a facility in Tupelo, Miss., the company said Wednesday.
This contract leverages our extensive manufacturing competencies to ensure these critical structures are delivered to NSWCCD as the first new Columbia-class submarine begins construction in October 2020, said Scott Forney, GA-EMS president.
The military service looks to procure 12 underwater vessels of that class over the next two decades.
