FAA Exercises Option on Raytheon’s Weather Data Processor Development Contract

Raytheon Technologies’ (NYSE: RTX) intelligence and space unit has secured a $21.7 million contract modification to continue to develop, test, train and implement a consolidated weather data platform for the Federal Aviation Administration.

The modification exercises the fourth option year of the NextGen Weather Processor contract, which aims to replace the FAA’s legacy weather data systems and information display technologies, Raytheon said Monday.

FAA initially awarded the company a $77 million contract to support the NWP program in May 2015.

The fully automated weather data processor will feature a common aviation weather display to provide air navigation professionals with increased situational awareness and include an external web server to deliver data to users outside of the National Airspace System.

NWP will use data from multiple sources including radars and environmental satellites to predict disruptions in airspace capacity.

“In addition, NWP can identify terminal and enroute weather safety hazards hours in advance to better support traffic flow-management and mitigate weather-related delays,” said Denis Donohue, president of surveillance and network systems at Raytheon Intelligence & Space.

The contract modification includes options that can extend work performance until April 2025.
