NASA has awarded Ball Aerospace a $96.9M delivery order to construct a spacecraft bus intended to help the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration monitor weather-related phenomena in space.
The order covers design and production work for the Space Weather Follow On-Lagrange 1 satellite meant to collect imagery and data on solar winds that NOAA will use to predict space weather, NASA said Thursday.
Ball secured the order through NASA’s Rapid Spacecraft Acquisition III contract and will also provide integration services, satellite-level assessments, training for the flight operations team, mission support and in-orbit technical assistance under the firm-fixed-price order.
NASA plans to launch SWFO-L1 as part of a rideshare mission with the agency’s Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe in 2024.
Work under the award is slated to conclude by March 31, 2025.
