Arvind Krishna, CEO and a board member of IBM (NYSE: IBM), has been elected to serve as chairman of the board of the technology company, effective Jan. 1.
He will succeed Virginia “Ginni” Rometty, who will retire by the end of December after a nearly 40-year career with IBM, the company said Wednesday.
Krishna assumed the roles of CEO and board member in April. He joined IBM in 1990 and has held senior leadership roles. He most recently served as senior vice president for cloud and cognitive software and was instrumental in the company’s acquisition of Red Hat.
IBM announced in October plans to spin off its managed infrastructure services unit to create two public companies. Krishna said then that the move will enable IBM to focus on open hybrid cloud platform and artificial intelligence capabilities.
