- Anthropic has regained government approval to restore Mythos 5 access to select U.S. organizations
- Commerce has authorized trusted partners to use Mythos 5 while Fable 5 remains restricted
- The 2026 Intel Summit will examine AI, intelligence modernization and cybersecurity priorities
Anthropic said the U.S. government has authorized the company to restore access to its Claude Mythos 5 artificial intelligence model for a limited group of U.S. organizations that operate and defend critical infrastructure, reversing part of a June 12 directive that suspended access to Mythos 5 and Fable 5 over security concerns.

As government and industry continue evaluating the role of advanced AI models in intelligence and cybersecurity missions, those priorities will be explored at the Potomac Officers Club’s 2026 Intel Summit on Sept. 24. The event will feature panel discussions about agentic AI, data governance, counterintelligence, open-source intelligence and cybersecurity in support of mission operations. “We’re restoring access for these organizations quickly, and we’re continuing to work with the government to expand access to Mythos 5 and make Fable 5 available for general use again,” Anthropic said in a post on X Friday.
How Has Access to Mythos 5 Changed?
According to The Epoch Times, the Trump administration issued an export control directive on June 12, suspending access to Mythos 5 and Fable 5 after identifying a way to jailbreak Fable 5, allowing users to circumvent the model’s built-in safety safeguards. Fable 5 shares the same underlying model as Mythos 5.
Anthropic said the government informed the company that Mythos 5 could once again be deployed to “a small group of cyber defenders and infrastructure providers.”
According to an Anthropic spokesperson cited by The Epoch Times, the company is restoring access to approved providers as quickly as possible while continuing to work with the government to expand availability of Mythos 5 and eventually restore general access to Fable 5.
What Did the Commerce Department Say?
In a June 26 letter obtained by The Epoch Times, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said he has concluded that “appropriate safeguards are in place to permit certain trusted partners to access the Claude Mythos 5 model.”
Lutnick said Anthropic worked with the U.S. government following the June 12 restrictions to address risks associated with the covered models and committed to developing standards and protocols for future AI model releases. The report said the department did not specify how many organizations would receive access or identify the criteria for selecting trusted partners.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Fable 5, the general-purpose version of Anthropic’s Mythos model, remains subject to the government’s restrictions, while access to Mythos 5 is limited to approved trusted partners.
What Was the Reported NSA Testing Involving Mythos?
Nextgov/FCW reported on Tuesday that parts of the National Security Agency lost access to Mythos 5 following the administration’s export control action against Anthropic.
The publication reported that Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., said NSA Director Gen. Joshua Rudd had described Mythos as breaking into classified systems during testing, prompting widespread speculation.
However, Nextgov/FCW also reported that a U.S. official later told The Economist’s defense editor the comments referred to authorized red-team testing of internal networks rather than an unauthorized cyber intrusion. The official said the NSA’s access came through Project Glasswing, an Anthropic program launched in April to provide select cybersecurity researchers and critical infrastructure organizations with early access to Mythos Preview. The report added that the testing was conducted to identify vulnerabilities before attackers could exploit them.
