Allison Transmission has secured a $162M contract to manufacture systems to power the U.S. Army’s M1A2 Abrams main battle tanks.
The company said Wednesday it expects to complete X1100-3B1 propulsion gear deliveries to the service branch in December 2021 and will also provide sustainment kits, upgrade services and other support under the contract.
The Army issued the contract as the service branch aims to convert its armored ground vehicle platform to the M1A2 System Enhancement Package Version 3 configuration.
Contract work will take place at the company’s global headquarters and production hub in Indianapolis.
The X1100 transmission machine is designed to function in heavy-tracked military vehicles that weigh at least 50 tons. Allison noted it began manufacturing the system in 1979.
