Quantum computing company IonQ has secured final regulatory clearance to close its acquisition of U.S.-based semiconductor foundry SkyWater Technology.
IonQ said Tuesday it expects the transaction to close on Friday, July 31.
How Will the Acquisition Support IonQ’s Quantum Computing Roadmap?
In January, IonQ agreed to acquire SkyWater to form a vertically integrated, full-stack quantum platform company. In May, stockholders of SkyWater approved the company’s merger with IonQ.
The deal is designed to help IonQ speed up its quantum computing development timeline and secure a fully scalable, domestic supply chain. IonQ said the acquisition supports its chip-based strategy for manufacturing future generations of its quantum computers.
Once the transaction closes, SkyWater will keep serving its existing customer base as a U.S.-based semiconductor foundry, operating as a wholly owned IonQ subsidiary under the SkyWater name. IonQ said its proprietary technology and development services will work alongside SkyWater’s manufacturing capabilities to serve the broader quantum ecosystem.

SkyWater Technology is a U.S.-based semiconductor foundry that provides manufacturing and technology development services for federal defense and commercial customers. The company uses its Technology as a Service model to support the development of quantum computing and other emerging capabilities through its facilities in Minnesota, Florida and Texas.
SkyWater is a Defense Microelectronics Activity-accredited Category 1A Trusted Foundry that offers foundational node and advanced packaging capabilities to strengthen supply chains and critical infrastructure.
What Other Acquisitions Has IonQ Made to Expand Its Quantum Portfolio?
The SkyWater deal builds on a string of acquisitions IonQ has pursued to grow its quantum capabilities.
In January, the company agreed to acquire Seed Innovations, a software and technology research and development specialist, to strengthen its quantum infrastructure and artificial intelligence-driven platform development.
In 2025, IonQ also acquired Capella Space, Vector Atomic and Skyloom Global, each adding new quantum technology capabilities to the company’s growing portfolio.
