Quantum computing company IonQ has finalized its acquisition of Capella Space to pursue its plan to develop a space-based quantum key distribution, or QKD, network designed to enable quantum-secure global communications.

Advancing Quantum Internet Through Space-Based QKD Network
College Park, Maryland-based IonQ said Tuesday it will integrate its quantum technology with Capella’s satellite infrastructure to build a space-based QKD network to help secure communications, ensuring that encryption keys cannot be intercepted or copied without detection.
According to IonQ, the QKD network is expected to serve as a platform for additional quantum networking and sensing growth vectors.
“We have an exceptional opportunity to accelerate our vision for the quantum internet, where global QKD will play a foundational role in enabling secure communications,” said IonQ CEO Niccolo de Masi.
“The integration of Capella’s advanced space-based platform and proven constellation of deployed satellites – along with IonQ’s quantum technologies – is expected to bolster commercial applications, global defense, and intelligence missions,” de Masi added.
With the deal’s completion, Capella customers will now have access to synthetic aperture radar and remote sensing capabilities through the first quantum-enabled Earth observation platform.
IonQ-Capella Space Deal
In May, IonQ agreed to purchase Capella Space as part of efforts to advance its space-based QKD network development plans.
IonQ noted that it expects the acquisition to help expand its quantum computing partnerships with U.S. top-secret government agencies and strengthen its position in advancing quantum networking technologies that could back infrastructure development in the space economy.
