According to the Defense Security Cooperation Agency, the U.K. FMS request covers six additional advanced extremely high frequency NMT, expanding a previous FMS case, valued at over $41 million, to a total of eight AEHF systems. The package also includes communications security devices, submarine high-data-rate masts, ancillary hardware, containers, spares, training, integration support and logistics services.
How Will the UK Use NMT?
DSCA said the Royal Navy plans to install the terminals aboard Dreadnought-class submarines to provide protected AEHF satellite connectivity between vessels and Ministry of Defence shore sites in a non-contested threat environment.
The sale advances U.S. foreign policy and national security objectives by strengthening a key NATO ally and enhancing interoperability across coalition operations. The U.K. is expected to absorb the systems without difficulty.
