The Arlington, Virginia-based all-domain defense provider said Thursday the expanded role aligns with its maritime and advanced technology development strategy, which focuses on enhancing shipbuilding capabilities and developing new multi-domain warfighting technologies.

Chewning will collaborate with division shipyard presidents to advance HII’s strategy for maritime capabilities and fleet architecture. He will also lead hybrid manned-unmanned teaming initiatives, identify outsourcing partners to boost throughput and pursue new naval capabilities. The EVP will also oversee enterprise strategy and the Dark Sea Labs group.

Chewning’s Career Highlights

Chewning joined HII in 2023 as EVP of strategy and technology, leading the company’s expansion in the shipbuilding industrial base and driving innovation in support of the Navy. He served for over two years at the Department of Defense as the chief of staff to the defense secretary and deputy assistant secretary for industrial policy.

The executive worked as a partner at McKinsey & Company and as principal at Booz & Company. He also served in the U.S. Army for over six years and worked as an investment banking analyst at Morgan Stanley to start his career.
