General Atomics has announced its acquisition of high-performance optical coatings and components manufacturer MLD Technologies. On Monday, General Atomics said MLD will be absorbed by its electromagnetic systems group.
General Atomics to Integrate MLD Into GA-EMS
Founded in 1997, MLD is headquartered in Mountain View, California, and operates primary engineering and manufacturing operations in Eugene, Oregon. The company designs, develops and builds ion-beam-sputtered, low optical-loss, laser-damage resistant thin-films for the ultraviolet-visible-infrared spectral region. The technology is used for lasers, non-linear crystals, medical instruments and other devices.
MLD is a long-time supplier of superior optical coatings to General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems, or GA-EMS.
According to Scott Forney, president of GA-EMS, the strategic acquisition of MLD enables his company to better support customers.
“Acquiring the MLD business enables us to streamline innovation and production of a key component in our laser weapon systems,” the executive shared. “This strategic acquisition also positions us to enhance the performance and durability of our high-power lasers, enabling us to deliver world-class directed energy weapon systems to our customers.”
Len Mott, president of MLD, added that his team is ready to support GA-EMS to meet the growing demand for laser weapon systems.
“Our expertise in optical coatings and components for high-energy laser systems will reinforce operational readiness and our ability to meet mission-critical customer requirements,” Mott stated.
