Battelle President and CEO Lou Von Thaer and Executive Mosaic CEO Jim Garrettson meet

Battelle CEO Lou Von Thaer Accepts 10th Wash100 Award

Executive Mosaic CEO Jim Garrettson has presented the 2025 Wash100 Award to Lou Von Thaer, president and CEO of Battelle.

The accolade is conferred annually to 100 of the most impactful leaders within government and the government contracting industry.

Von Thaer’s recent win, his 10th overall, is a recognition of his achievements in championing innovation at Battelle and leading the nonprofit research and development organization toward securing contract awards from the Department of Defense.

“Lou has become something of a Wash100 legend, with a staggering 10 wins under his belt,” said Garrettson, who founded the Wash100 Award in 2014.

“With a career that’s spanned top roles at DynCorp, Leidos and General Dynamics, Lou brings unmatched experience and focus to a $6.5 billion science and tech portfolio aimed squarely at national security, health and beyond,” the Executive Mosaic CEO added.

Battelle’s Collaboration With Government

Von Thaer, a seasoned govcon executive, has led Battelle as president and CEO since 2017. Under his leadership, the R&D organization established partnerships with various defense and government agencies.

In 2024 alone, Battelle won a spot in the Department of Defense’s Distributed Bioindustrial Manufacturing Program and project to develop a Reactivating Nerve Agent Treatment System.

Battelle also worked with the Department of Energy in advancing efforts to generate clean energy and reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
