NorthStar-MARS Team Wins $536.7M USS Enterprise Contract

NorthStar Maritime Dismantlement Services, a partnership between NorthStar Group Services and Modern American Recycling and Radiological Services, has secured a firm-fixed-price contract valued at $536.7 million to dismantle, recycle and dispose of the USS Enterprise, a decommissioned nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.

The contract award covers the safe transport and disposal of hazardous materials, including low-level radioactive waste, from the military ship, the Department of Defense said.

Contract Details

The ship, also known as CVN-65, will be dismantled in its entirety in Mobile, Alabama, until November 2029.

The contract was procured competitively via the Procurement Integrated Enterprise Environment. The Navy received three orders.

The Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington, D.C., serves as the contracting activity.

Former USS Enterprise End of Service

USS Enterprise is the world’s first nuclear aircraft carrier. It was commissioned by the Navy in 1961 to support Project Mercury, the nation’s first human spaceflight program, and was involved in the Friendship 7 orbital spaceflight.

Beyond science missions, USS Enterprise played key roles during the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Vietnam War, Operation Joint Endeavor off the coast of Bosnia and anti-terrorism missions in Iraq.

CVN-65 was decommissioned in 2017, after five decades of service.
