President Joe Biden has extended a national emergency issued by the previous administration in 2019 to secure the U.S. information and communications technology and services supply chain.
In a message to Congress, Biden said the unrestricted acquisition and use of ICT technology and services from foreign manufacturers and suppliers continue to threaten national security, foreign policy and economy.
“Therefore, I have determined that it is necessary to continue the national emergency declared in Executive Order 13873 with respect to securing the information and communications technology and services supply chain,” Biden wrote in a letter published Wednesday on the White House’s website.
The Trump administration released the EO to prohibit the use and procurement of ICT products manufactured or supplied by individuals controlled by or subject to the jurisdiction of a foreign adversary.
In June 2021, Biden signed an executive order to provide additional measures to maintain the national emergency, which is due to expire on May 15.
