The State Department has approved a potential $259 million foreign military sale deal involving the modernization of Turkey’s F-16 avionics system.
Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) will be the prime contractor for the agreement, which is part of efforts by the Turkish government to maintain fighter aircraft safety and interoperability with NATO for national security initiatives, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency said Monday.
Under the FMS, Turkey will acquire Operational Flight Program avionics software, and hardware for the Multifunctional Information Distribution System Block Upgrade II.
Lockheed could also provide support in software upgrades, integration and testing, training, engineering and logistics.
DSCA has notified Congress of the proposed sale and said the deal will not require the presence of U.S. government or Lockheed representatives in Turkey.
