Canada will provide Ukraine with a medium-range air defense system Raytheon Technologies (NYSE: RTX) will build under an approximately $302 million purchase deal between the North American country and the U.S.
The National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System donation is the latest in Canada’s military assistance to Ukraine and marks the first time the latter is providing the European country with a defensive platform against air attacks, the Canadian armed forces said Tuesday.
Ukraine already operates NASAMS for homeland and critical asset defense against hostile aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles as well as cruise missile threats. The system employs the Sentinel A3 radar and a fire distribution center and is capable of launching the AIM-9X, the Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile and its extended range variant.
Aside from the ordered missile system, Canada’s military aid to Ukraine includes delivery of over six million pounds of military donations from the country and allies since March 2022.
“We have committed over [CAD] $1 billion in military assistance to Ukraine… Canada will continue to collaborate with the United States, as well as other Allies and partners, to address Ukraine’s defense priorities in the short and long term,” said Anita Anand, Canadian minister of national defense.
