Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC) has won a potential five-year, $3.29 billion contract from the Missile Defense Agency to design, build, test and deploy a next-generation weapon system for defending against ballistic missile strikes.
The company will aim to produce Ground-Based Midcourse Defense software and hardware that would exceed the performance of the current GMD platform, the Department of Defense said Friday.
According to MDA’s solicitation documents, the program covers the development of a GMD fire control, a ground support system, a communication network and an in-flight interceptor communication system data terminal.
The indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract also includes support for the Next Generation Interceptor program.
DOD noted the first two delivery orders under the award are worth $1.14 billion combined and the initial task order is valued at $115.3 million.
Work will take place in Huntsville, Alabama, and the ordering period is scheduled to conclude on July 29, 2027.
MDA is obligating $76.56 million on the award from the agency’s fiscal 2022 research, development, test and evaluation and operations and maintenance funds.
