Lisa Monaco Calls for Increased Private Sector Engagement to Address Cyberthreats

Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco said companies should reach out to the Department of Justice and other law enforcement agencies to counter ransomware and other cyberthreats and prevent other enterprises from becoming future victims of ransomware attacks.

“We know those victims — oftentimes your clients — face reputational risks, they face operational risks, ultimately though, we are seeing lives and livelihoods risked. Given the stakes, we need that engagement from victim companies and we need it early,” Monaco said Wednesday at the cybersecurity roundtable of DOJ’s criminal division.

She said DOJ launched several efforts to address cyberthreats, including the Civil Cyber-Fraud Initiative, National Cryptocurrency Enforcement Team and the Ransomware and Digital Extortion Task Force.

Monaco also cited the objectives of the Comprehensive Cyber Review and those are assessing how to enhance capabilities to investigate, disrupt and prosecute threat actors and building up cyber resiliency as a multinational organization.
