SwRI Wins $99M USAF Contract to Study Aircraft System Degradation

Southwest Research Institute will help the U.S. Air Force study the degradation process for aircraft structures under a potential six-year, $99 million contract.

The nonprofit organization will conduct research and engineering work on aging systems and materials in support of the Center for Aircraft Structural Life Extension, also known as CAStLE, the Department of Defense said Friday.

USAF received three offers for the indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract, is obligating $200,000 on the initial task order and expects the project to conclude by March 29, 2027.

Work will take place at SwRI’s facility in San Antonio and at the USAF Academy in Colorado.

CAStLE projects seek to help the center’s government, commercial and academic sponsors to understand life cycle of materials through a “cradle-to-grave” approach.
