The House on Tuesday voted 335-78 to pass a bill that would authorize $740.5B in fiscal year 2021 funds for the Department of Defense, The Wall Street Journal reported.
The FY 2021 National Defense Authorization Act, named after Rep. Mac Thornberry, R-Texas, includes hazard pay for warfighters and directs the administration to send to Congress a comprehensive assessment of troop withdrawal from Afghanistan before it can use funds. The NDAA prevents the White House from pulling out warfighters from Germany until 120 days after the DoD secretary reviews the move.
The bipartisan vote surpasses the two-thirds majority that would be required to override a possible veto by President Donald Trump.
Rep. Adam Smith, D-Wash., chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, said the FY 2021 NDAA provides warfighters the needed resources to maintain U.S. military superiority and competitive edge.
“Provisions in the bill will remove all names, symbols, displays, monuments, and paraphernalia across the military that honor or commemorate the Confederacy and will create a Chief Diversity Officer within the Department of Defense to ensure our military reflects our country’s diversity,” Smith added.
