AFRL Issues RFI for 'Mayhem' Hypersonic Weapon R&D Program

The U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory is looking for potential sources of research and development services to support the Air Force’s efforts to deploy a hypersonic air-breathing demonstrator weapon.

AFRL released the solicitation on Wednesday to help inform the requirements for the service branch’s Expendable Hypersonic Air-Breathing Multimission Demonstrator or “Mayhem” initiative.

According to the request for information, the Mayhem System Demonstrator must have the capacity to carry large payloads over long distances beyond hypersonic thresholds. MSD should also support three government payloads in line with mission-defined requirements, the notice states.

AFRL plans to issue a multiple-award, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract for Mayhem propulsion technology development and ground testing. A separate IDIQ contract will be issued for the design of air vehicle systems and scramjet integration.

The lab may opt to coordinate with consortia to select contractors for both awards.

Interested parties must submit reponses to the RFI through Sept. 25.
