Kevin McAleenan
Kevin McAleenan, a 2019 Wash100 award recipient, is stepping down from his role as acting secretary of the Department of Homeland Security after six months on the job, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday.
President Donald Trump announced on Twitter the resignation of McAleenan, saying the latter “wants to spend more time with his family and go to the private sector.”
œI will be announcing the new Acting Secretary next week. Many wonderful candidates!, Trump added.
McAleenan assumed his post in April after then DHS Secretary and 2018 Wash100 awardee Kirstjen Nielsen resigned from the role. He previously served as commissioner of the Customs and Border Protection within DHS.
During his tenure as interim DHS chief, he implemented the administration™s policy goals on immigration, such as expediting the construction of a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border and reducing the number of individuals crossing the border each month.
