Milley, who assumed his current role in August 2015, would become the 20th JCS leader and succeed U.S. Marine Corps Gen. Joseph Dunford if the Senate confirms him for the post.
Dunford, a 2018 Wash100 awardee, has served as the country’s highest-ranking military officer since October 2015 and is due to step down in September of next year.
Milley previously served as commander of Army Forces Command, commanding general of the International Security Assistance Force Joint Command and deputy commanding general of U.S. Forces-Afghanistan.
He also worked as a military assistant to the defense secretary and served as commanding general of the 10th Mountain Division.
The 38-year military veteran has been deployed to Colombia, Somalia, Egypt, Panama, Haiti, Iraq and Afghanistan to support several combat operations.
