Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Draper has received a potential five-year, $2.2 billion contract from the U.S. Navy to provide engineering and technical support services for the maintenance and sustainment of the Mark 6 guidance subsystem of the submarine-launched Trident II ballistic missile.
The sole-source, cost-plus-fixed-fee contract includes support for research and development work associated with strategic guidance, navigation and control to facilitate the full-scale development of the follow-on Mark 7 Guidance Subsystem and reentry subsystem and support for the Columbia/Dreadnought ship construction integration efforts, the Department of Defense said Friday.
The nonprofit R&D organization will perform work in Massachusetts, Florida, Indiana, Alabama and Washington, D.C., through Sept. 30, 2028.
The contract will also support a foreign military sales agreement with the U.K. government and the U.S. Navy’s Strategic Systems Programs will obligate $5.2 million in U.K. funding.
According to Draper, the Mark 6 MOD 1 guidance system is designed for use with the submarine-launched Trident II (D5) missile. The contractor used a modular design approach and model-based engineering in the system’s design and development process.
