Lina Khan: FTC’s New Office Aims to Keep Pace With Emerging Tech, Market Trends

The Federal Trade Commission has established an office to support its policy and law enforcement work by building up its capability to understand the evolving technological challenges and trends in the digital marketplace.

FTC Chief Technology Officer Stephanie Nguyen will lead the newly created office of technology, which will be equipped with staff and resources to advance the agency’s work, the commission said Friday.

Nguyen assumed the CTO role at FTC in October 2022. She previously served as an MIT research scientist and worked at the White House as part of the U.S. Digital Service.

Our office of technology is a natural next step in ensuring we have the in-house skills needed to fully grasp evolving technologies and market trends as we continue to tackle unlawful business practices and protect Americans,” FTC Chair Lina Khan noted.

The new office will support the commission’s law enforcement investigations into business practices and technologies underlying them, work with the commission and personnel on research and policy initiatives and highlight emerging technologies and market trends by engaging with the public and other stakeholders through consultations, research conferences and workshops.
