Balan Ayyar, president and chief operating officer of Sevatec,  has taken a new dual role as president and CEO of the Fairfax, Virginia-based information technology services contractor.
He will oversee the company’s day-to-day operations, expansion and market strategies and overall performance and succeeds Sonny Kakar, who has stepped down from the CEO role and will continue to serve as chairman of the board, Sevatec said Monday.
Ayyar joined the company in September 2014 as COO and subsequently added the president title one year later.
According to Sevatec,  he has played a key role in the company’s efforts to transform into a mid-tier services provider to the federal sector over the past 18 months.
He previously held a 27-year career at the U.S. Air Force, where he managed a 2, 600-employee organization responsible for manpower, sales, advertising, marketing and accessions functions of the military service.
