Tom McCaffery, former assistant secretary for health affairs at the Department of Defense, has joined research and consulting firm Health Management Associates as a principal.
He will work from HMA’s office in Washington, D.C. and brings military health care program experience to his new position, the company said Wednesday.
McCaffery noted that he aims to help the company “expand its engagement with federal health sectors beyond Medicaid and Medicare.”
“I look forward to engaging in this new capacity while continuing to support those served by the military health system and the Veterans Health Administration.”
His civilian leadership service at the Pentagon spanned enterprise management, strategic planning and modernization for hospitals, clinics, outpatient facilities and programs that compose the Military Health System.
Prior to DOD, he held VP roles at California State Partnerships and the Public Employees Retirement System business at Blue Shield of California.
HMA hired McCaferry after the company formed a joint venture with Oxford Government Consulting under the Small Business Administration’s All Small Mentor-Protege Program.
