The State Department has approved Spain’s request to purchase CH-47F Chinook cargo helicopters and related equipment under a potential $1.3 billion foreign military sales agreement.
Boeing (NYSE: BA) will serve as prime contractor of the possible sale, which covers 17 Chinooks with customer-unique modifications, 21 AN/AAR-57A(V)8 common missile warning systems and 42 embedded global positioning system inertial navigation systems, the Defense Security Cooperation Agencysaid Wednesday.
The FMS deal will also include mission equipment; modification hardware and services; aircraft survivability equipment; navigation equipment; airframe and engine spare parts; technical assistance; and logistics and program support services.
Spain will use the Chinook helicopters to expand its heavy lift capacity and carry out homeland defense and regional security missions.
The potential sale will not affect basic military balance in the region and will not require the deployment of additional government or contractor representatives to Spain, DSCA noted.
The agency notified Congress of the possible deal on Wednesday.
