State Department OKs Japan’s $900M SM-6 Block I Missile FMS

The State Department has approved Japan’s foreign military sales request to procure Standard Missile 6 Block I Missiles and related equipment worth an estimated $900 million.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency said Friday RTX will be the principal contractor of the proposed sale.

Details of Potential SM-6 Block I Missile Contract

Under the potential agreement, Japan intends to purchase 150 SM-6 Block I missiles and non-MDE items such as MK 21 Mod 3 Vertical Launch System canisters. The Asian nation also requested component parts, support equipment and continued engineering, integration and test, or EI&T, materiel and support needed for the production of the missiles.

Furthermore, the proposed deal involves special test and handling equipment, training and training equipment and aids, technical publications and data, U.S. government and contractor engineering and technical assistance, related studies and analysis support and other related elements of logistics and program support.

The purchase would enable the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force to utilize the latest Standard Missile capabilities through its existing and future AEGIS Weapon System equipped surface combatant. It would also help bolster Japan’s national defense capabilities and enable it to safeguard the country along with allied land forces stationed in its territory.

Additionally, the possible agreement is intended to strengthen relations with the United States, foster political stability, boost economic growth and enhance Japan’s role in integrated air missile defense in the Indo-Pacific region.

The DSCA notified Congress of this potential deal Friday.
