The State Department has approved Romania’s request to purchase AIM-120 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles and related equipment.
The Defense Security Cooperation Agency said Thursday it has notified Congress of the possible $592 million foreign military sale, under which RTX (NYSE: RTX) will serve as the principal contractor.
The proposed FMS includes 186 AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM and four guidance sections. The new generation weapon system is equipped with an active radar with an inertial reference unit and a micro-computer to ensure that it finds its target and completes a successful intercept.
RTX will also provide contractor engineering, technical and logistics support.
According to Kathleen Kavalec, U.S. ambassador to Romania, the missiles would strengthen the Romanian Air Force. “This acquisition demonstrates the Romanian government’s strong commitment to security and defense.”
The munitions purchase request comes months after the State Department also approved Bucharest’s $340.8 million FMS of 300 AIM-9X Sidewinder Block II tactical missiles and $80 million FMS of 263 Javelin FGM-148F missiles and Javelin command launch units.
AMRAAM is employed by 40 countries, including the United States and Romania.
