Six companies have received separate contracts from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to develop autonomous underwater robots for deep-sea exploration.
L3Harris Technologies (NYSE: LHX), Leidos (NYSE: LDOS) and Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC) will aim to create an integrated approach to address operational and technological requirements under DARPA’s Angler program as Track A awardees, the agency said Wednesday.
EdgeTech, Kitware and Soartech are the program’s Track B contractors and will develop tools intended to facilitate perception, autonomy and navigation.
DARPA seeks robots that will work to survey and explore ocean depths with the use of terrestrial, space robotic and underwater sensing tools.
The three-phase Angler program will conclude with the completion and deployment of a working technology prototype in an underwater mission.
