The Senate voted 86-14 Thursday to pass a $740.5B defense policy bill for fiscal year 2021, The Hill reported.
The proposed FY 2021 National Defense Authorization Act includes a base budget of $636.4B for the Department of Defense, $69B for overseas contingency operations and $25.9B for the Department of Energy’s national security programs.
The bill would establish a commission to develop a plan to change the name of military installations named for Confederacy leaders and direct DoD to implement the plan within three years. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) championed the language in the NDAA, which faces a veto threat from President Donald Trump over the base renaming proposal.
The House approved on Tuesday its version of the NDAA. Lawmakers will now reconcile the House and Senate bills to come up with the final legislation.
