The Department of Defense said Friday the non-competitive firm-fixed-price contract covers the procurement of up to 55 units SM-3 Block IB All-Up Rounds built to SM-3 Block IB specifications, including manufacturing, assembly and testing.
RTX will perform work in Tucson, Arizona and Huntsville, Alabama. The project was started on May 16 and is expected to be completed by March 31, 2031.
As the contracting activity, the MDA will provide $443.6 million from fiscal 2024 procurement funds and $56.4 million from fiscal 2025 procurement funds.
The SM-3 Block IB Interceptor is a surface-to-air missile designed to intercept short- to intermediate-range ballistic missiles through the “hit-to-kill” technique, which utilizes sheer force instead of an explosive warhead. The IB Interceptor variant is equipped with a two-color infrared seeker and enhanced steering and propulsion capabilities. It employs short, precise bursts of propulsion to guide the missile toward incoming targets. The SM-3 Block IB Interceptor was launched from an Aegis Ashore testing site for the first time in 2014 and deployed on Navy warships in the same year.
