Michelle Howard, a retired U.S. Navy admiral, has been elected to serve on IBM™s (NYSE: IBM) board of directors beginning on March 1.
The 35-year military veteran retired in December 2017 after she served as commander of Allied Joint Force Command Naples and U.S. Naval Forces in Europe and Africa, IBM said Tuesday.
Howard, the first African-American woman to command a Navy ship and the first woman to hold a four-star admiral rank, currently teaches international policy and cybersecurity at George Washington University.
In 2014, she became the first woman and African-American to be appointed to vice chief of naval operations.
Ginni Rometty, IBM chairman, president and CEO, said Howard brings leadership skills, international experience and information technology and cybersecurity experience to the company’s board.
