President Donald Trump plans to redirect approximately $7.2B in defense funds in 2020 to support construction work on the border wall project, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.
The administration intends to extract $3.5B from the Department of Defense’s budget for military counterdrug initiatives and $3.7B from its funds for military construction projects to finish about 885 miles of border wall by spring 2022, according to internal planning document obtained by the Post.
The plan would bring the total federal funds earmarked for the border wall project to $18.4B under the Trump administration.
The report said the administration has pledged to complete 450 miles of fencing by the end of 2020 and has constructed 101 miles of new barriers to date.
