Red Hat’s David Egts on Importance of Multicloud, Automation in Federal Digital Transformation

    David Egts, chief technologist at Red Hat’s North American public sector business, explained in a video interview posted Thursday on FedScoop how a multicloud portfolio approach to information technology helps accelerate digital transformation efforts in the federal government.

    “With a multicloud portfolio approach, it also increases the ability to share applications between agencies and within agencies no matter what clouds they choose,” he said during the IBM ThinkGov Virtual Summit.

    Egts highlighted the importance of automation and how it helps the government facilitate and speed up the delivery of digital services.

    “The more agencies can automate their processes, the faster they could deliver digital services to their citizens and to their stakeholders. The more agencies can automate their processes, the more they could scale them up and down as demand rises and falls without human intervention,” he told Wyatt Kash of Scoop News Group.

    He called on agencies to prioritize automation in order to ensure the security of government data. He said automation could help agencies address human error and inconsistencies and allow their employees to focus more on improving service delivery.

    When asked about one IT lesson agencies could take from the COVID-19 pandemic, Egts said that agencies should keep their options as open as possible to maximize flexibility.

    “By building on open substrate, you could quickly move and burst applications as needs dictate from on premise to public cloud to the edge with minimal rework,” he added.
