David Egts, chief technologist for North America public sector at Red Hat, wrote in an FCW commentary piece published Thursday that there are four best practices federal information technology administrators should consider adopting to support their agencies™ IT modernization efforts and one is focusing on people and processes.
He cited the current administration™s executive order on artificial intelligence and the Federal Cloud Computing Strategy and how they emphasize the need for improved processes and a highly skilled workforce. Another measure federal IT leaders should bear in mind is advancing automation.
Egts discussed how automation could benefit application development processes and disaster recovery and security responses. He also cited how adopting a multicloud or hybrid approach could help agencies meet the Federal Cloud Computing Strategy, achieve cost savings and avoid vendor lock-in arrangements. The fourth best practice is considering commercially backed open source.
œAgencies should seek out partners that work directly with open-source communities and have experience turning projects into products. These organizations make open-source code enterprise-ready through user-friendly interfaces and authoritative, hardened security components and guidance, Egts wrote.
