Raytheon (NYSE: RTN) has secured a potential $300 million contract to design and build an anti-submarine technology for U.S. Navy personnel to locate and track enemy submarines from littoral combat ships.
The Navy awarded the contract following the completion of a study and production assessment of Raytheon’s Variable Depth Sonar system, the company said Tuesday.
Raytheon developed the sonar technology with partners Curtiss Wright-Indal, Adaptive Methods, Purvis Systems and Harbor Branch.
Sailors from Florida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute assessed the features of the ship-deployed sonar design.
Raytheon aims to complete a full pre-production test article by late 2018.
The contract has a base value of $27.9 million and includes multiple options for production.
