Paul Nakasone, a retired U.S. Army general and seven-time Wash100 awardee, has joined the board of directors of San Francisco-based artificial intelligence research company OpenAI.
He will serve on the board’s newly created safety and security committee and advise the company on how AI technologies can be used to improve cyberthreat detection and response, OpenAI said Thursday.
“General Nakasone’s unparalleled experience in areas like cybersecurity will help guide OpenAI in achieving its mission of ensuring artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity,” commented Bret Taylor, chair of OpenAI’s board.
Nakasone retired in February after serving as commander of Cyber Command, director of the National Security Agency and chief of the Central Security Service.
He held command and staff positions in the Army and was assigned to elite cyber units in the U.S., South Korea, Iraq and Afghanistan.
“I look forward to contributing to OpenAI’s efforts to ensure artificial general intelligence is safe and beneficial to people around the world,” said Nakasone.
