Pat Gelsinger: VMware Targets New Gov't Cloud Support Opportunity

Pat Gelsinger, VMware CEO, has said he believes the company’s partnerships with multiple cloud providers could support its pursuit of additional contracts in the government market, Fierce Telecom reported Wednesday.

He told analysts during a recent earnings call that VMware has been following events related to the Department of Defense’s Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure contract.

DoD awarded the $10B JEDI contract to Microsoft in late October and the contract award decision was challenged by Amazon Web Services through a federal suit.

VMware partners include AWS, Microsoft, IBM (NYSE: IBM) and Oracle (NYSE: ORCL) — all of which pursued the multibillion contract.

“Overall, we’re well-positioned with our current partnerships and we do expect that through those partnerships that we’ll have a thriving government business, both on-premise as we have had as well as in hybrid and cloud offerings.”

For its third-quarter fiscal 2020, VMware earned $2.46B in revenue and more than 13 percent of that figure came from hybrid cloud and software-as-a-service bookings.
